There is a Mormonism that you hear every once in a while… You sometimes hear the term “The Nephite Disease”. Basically what this is referring to is the cycle the Nephites followed and kept following in the Book of Mormon. The cycle is this. The Lord blesses his people, they start to prosper, they start to become rich, they become prideful, they forget the Lord, and then they become a cursed people.
I was reading the other day in Helaman 13, and came across a couple of scriptures that reminded me of what is going on in the US right now. Here is the first couple of verses I would like to share in this post.
22 Ye do not remember the Lord your God in the things with which he hath blessed
you, but ye do always remember your riches, not to thank the Lord your God for them; yea, your hearts are not drawn out unto the Lord, but they do swell with great pride, unto boasting, and unto great swelling, envyings, strifes, malice, persecutions, and murders, and all manner of iniquities.
23 For this cause hath the Lord God caused that a curse should come upon the land, and also upon your riches, and this because of your iniquities.
It is interesting that the Lord would cause a curse to come upon the land because of the peoples pride in their riches. Now I am not saying riches are bad, it is just how they are used and where you place your thanks.
This is not the main point I want to make in this post. The following verse talks about the item that really started me thinking.
27 But behold, if a man shall come among you and shall say: Do this, and there is no iniquity; do that and ye shall not suffer; yea, he will say: Walk after the pride of your own hearts; yea, walk after the pride of your eyes, and do whatsoever your heart desireth—and if a man shall come among you and say this, ye will receive him, and say that he is a prophet.
28 Yea, ye will lift him up, and ye will give unto him of your substance; ye will give unto him of your gold, and of your silver, and ye will clothe him with costly apparel; and because he speaketh flattering words unto you, and he saith that all is well, then ye will not find fault with him.
29 O ye wicked and ye perverse generation; ye hardened and ye stiffnecked people, how long will ye suppose that the Lord will suffer you? Yea, how long will ye suffer yourselves to be led by foolish and blind guides? Yea, how long will ye choose darkness rather than light?
30 Yea, behold, the anger of the Lord is already kindled against you; behold, he hath cursed the land because of your iniquity.
Does that not sound like today. We don’t want to hear that we are in iniquity, but if someone tells us that it is not our fault, and appeals to our pride, we follow that person and even revere him as a prophet. I do think that this country needs a change. But the change this country needs is a shift to wards God. Not a shift to wards removing God from this country. We need to remember were our riches and prosperity comes from. If we are blessed, it is because the Lord blessed us, not because of our own efforts. This country was based on Freedom of religion. But we have changed that and twisted it to Freedom from religion. Until this country turns back to the Lord, it will never prosper.
Why do we constantly support the person who is not living the laws of the land or the laws of God. Look at the news head lines. There are so many polititians that are not following the founding priciples of this country. But they always have support from the people. Is it because they tell us that nothing is wrong, and the appeal to our pride?
