All is well in Zion… Stop being a pessimist.

ONE of the principles that is taught in the Book of Mormon, and in modern teachings is that of,  “liken all scriptures unto us, that it might be for our profit and learning.” (1 Nephi 19:23).   Ezra Taft Benson in April of 1984 tells us to:  “We urge you to study the Book of Mormon as individuals and families and then to do as the prophet Nephi counseled: liken the scriptures to yourselves so that it will be for your profit and learning.”

To liken the scriptures to yourself is to compare them to your own life. To do this

Weapons of their rebellion.

I have posted before about the Traditions of Fathers in several posts: Traditions of their fathers. and Iniquity of their fathers.  I would like to continue this discussion a little, and then add an additional thought to it as well.   In Sunday School, the lesson was on Alma 23-29 (Lesson 26: Converted unto the Lord).

The teacher forwarded me some material that she wanted me to discuss with the class.  In that material, it included this quote by Spencer W. Kimball.

Down in New Zealand, I was the recipient of many courtesies while there. They sang and danced and rolled

Cleansing Fire

Wildfire

The other day in sacrament meeting one of the youth speakers talked about having the Holy Ghost cleanse your should by Fire.   I thought the idea of having the Holy Ghost actually burn your sins and desire to sin from you as very interesting.  So I figured I would research it some more.

John the Baptist in Judea said:

I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire” (Matt. 3:11).

Stand Strong

For work, I got to go to the beautiful city of Sydney Australia.  The company I work for is moving from one office to another office in Sydney.  As with most business trips, it is customary for you to go to lunch or dinner with the group of people you are going to be working with.  In this case, it was the entire office staff (5 people plus me).   We went to a restaurant, and everyone was having tea with their meal.  I declined the tea.  At that point the discussion turned to religion, and I was asked where I …

What I have learned as my hair gets grayer.

I am now 41 years old, and my hair has become mostly gray.   I have also been married for almost 14 years (in March) to a very loving and patient wife (momzoo).  During the course of 13 years of marriage, and 41 years of time, there are a few things I have learned and have picked up.  (And at times, I need to sit down and remind myself of them.)

These are just some random thoughts that I have had in the last little while.

Right Lane Philosopy – Repost

NOTE: this was originally posted on Jan 15, 2010.  But because of some recent events, I needed to remind myself of it.  So I am reposting it.

——-

A friend and I were talking the other day.  I was discussing how when I get home I am usually upset and tense.  It was leading to anger issues when I got home from work.  The friend gave me a suggestion.  He said that I should drive in the right lane, and go about 5 miles per hour slower than I usually did, and listen to some music that I really like.  …

And my father dwelt in a tent

6. Now, all these things were said and done as my father dwelt in a tent in the valley which he called Lemuel.  1 Nephi 1:6

I have always wondered why Nehi told everyone that his father dwelt in a tent.   I also think that everything in the scriptures, no matter how minor it may seem, was put there for a reason.   It was not easy for Nephi to write on the plates.  It would take time and resources to do so.  So why would he waste the time to tell us that his father dwelt in a tent?    The …

President packer… Cont.

A lot has been said and a lot will be said about President Packer’s talk from Conference Oct 2010.  Someone forwarded this link to me:

http://gaymormonguy.blogspot.com/2010/10/president-packers-talk-from-gay-mormon.html?spref=fb

This is a blog post by a Gay Mormon and his presepective on the talk.  It think that the author of this blog understands the post better than I did.  Please give it a read, he has a very insightful insight.…

President Packer said WHAT?

There has been a lot of “wars, and rumors of wars” over what President Boyd K Packer said in the Oct 2010 General Conference about the stance the Church has on Homosexuality.  The wars have started because of a talk entitled, “Cleansing the Inner Vessel.“  In that talk President Packer says:

We teach a standard of moral conduct that will protect us from Satan’s many substitutes or counterfeits for marriage. We must understand that any persuasion to enter into any relationship that is not in harmony with the principles of the gospel must be wrong. From the Book of Mormon

Wandering in the desert

Do you ever feel that life is like wandering in a desert.  You have no idea where you are, where you have been, or where you are going?   The only thing you know is that it is hot and you think you have been here before.

After Lehi, his family, and Ishmael’s family left Jerusalem and were traveling in the wilderness, the Lord directed them in their travels with a Liahona.  Nephi describes it as such.

And it came to pass that as my father arose in the morning, and went forth to the tent door, to his great astonishment
